People rarely change their passwords after a data breach of their online service and if they do, the new passwords are often no stronger than the old ones, according to research by researchers at two American universities. 33% of the persons thanged their password on a compromised website had an average of thirty accounts with the same or similar passwords, of which only 60% at least password. At 70 % the password changes resulted in passwords that were just as strong or even weaker. Current data breach reports are ineffective because most of the users affected do not respond adequately to address their risk in both the compromised domain and other domains the research shows.
